New DSS2 image of the Southern Cross and the Coalsack

This is a new Digital Sky Survey 2 image of the Southern Cross and the Coalsack in the southern sky. The field is 9 degrees across. The Coalsack is the most famous of the so-called "dark nebulae", or "absorption nebulae".
